When you unable to do anything on the map, you will be inside the 'View Mode'. Kindly change it to 'Edit mode', so that you can edit the map. To do this, Click on "Maps-->Edit Mode".

It is to be noted that Freeplane requires latest version of Java to be present in your system. Sometimes the issue can also be because you are trying to install Freeplane with a latest version but Java is obsolete or even vice versa.
