==ICT Competency==
Operating systems use a program called the Graphical User Interface (GUI, which is pronounced as goo-ee). It allows you to access other computer programmes (applications) by using a mouse. The popular operating systems are Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux and Mac OSx. In this section, you will learn about the functions of an operating system, using an example of Ubuntu GNU/Linux operating system. With this learning, you can operate a computer with Windows of Mac operating systems

==Educational application and relevance==
Ubuntu is a ‘Free and Open Source Software’ (called FOSS in short). While software applications like Microsoft Windows or Adobe Photoshop are ‘proprietary’ , meaning they cannot be copied or shared or modified by us, FOSS applications are licensed under the ‘General Public License’ which allows all of us to share the software freely, we can also modify the software as per our needs.
Hence it is important to use FOSS in our schools. Teachers must learn and teach FOSS and avoid use of proprietary software, since it is not possible for all to access and use proprietary software.<br> Since all the software like Office, web browser, educational software can be bundled with Ubuntu GNU/Linux operating system, so all applications can be installed on the computer at one time. On proprietary software Windows, each software has to be separately installed, which makes it cumbersome and complicated.<br> There are a large number of freely shareable educational tools on GNU/Linux, pertaining to mathematics, science, social sciences etc which can be used in all schools.<br> There are large number of additional tools on GNU/Linux freely shareable, such as IBUS which supports word processing in more than 50 languages, including all languages used in Karnataka such as Assamese, Assamese, Tamil, Urdu, Marathi, Hindi etc. or the ORCA screen reader necessary for the visually handicapped or Scribus for desktop publishing.<br>

==Version==
The first Ubuntu release coincided with the release of Ubuntu 5.10, which was codenamed Breezy Badger on 2005-10-13. With the 8.04 Hardy Heron release of Ubuntu it was given the name of Ubuntu Education Edition[5] and was changed to be an add-on to a standard Ubuntu installation instead of being an installable LiveCD. From version 9.10 onwards, Ubuntu changed to be available as a full system DVD instead of an Add-on CD.[6] Ubuntu is also installable[7] via a selection of "Ubuntu" packages for all distributions using the official Ubuntu repositories (Ubuntu and Kubuntu mainly).

Since 14.04, Ubuntu has become LTS-only;[8] Ubuntu have announced that they will skip Ubuntu 16.04 LTS update. And they plan on staying with 14.04 due to lack of contributors.

Graphics: If you plan to use the netbook interface, you will require a graphics card that supports 3D acceleration on Ubuntu. Most netbooks are supported very well and shouldn't be problematic.
==Overview of Features==
Ubuntu is the Linux Terminal Server Project and many applications relevant to education including GCompris, KDE Edutainment Suite, Sabayon Profile Manager, Pessulus Lockdown Editor, Ubuntu Menueditor, LibreOffice, Gnome Nanny and iTalc. Ubuntu CDs were previously available free of charge through their Shipit service; since version 8.10 (2008) it is only available as a download in a DVD format.

Edubuntu's default GUI is Unity while GNOME is still available.[1] Unity has been the default GUI since the release of 12.04. Since release 7.10, KDE is also available as Ubuntu KDE. In 2010 Ubuntu and the Qimo 4 Kids project were working on providing Qimo within Ubuntu,[2] but this was not done as it would not have fitted on a CD.

Select your user name and type your password the desktop will appear. The desktop is shown in image here. When you switch on your computer, you will see a login screen, login with the user id and password created by the system administrator. Edubuntu allows you to have a user interface in Assamese, by specifying your language as Assamese during your user id creation. The applications menu at the top left has a list of all the programmes (apps) on your computer. The places menu, next to it, lets you access the hard disk, CD/DVD or pen drives. Digital cameras and MP3 players are also listed here when plugged-in.
The Application menu has sub menus for Education, Office, Internet, Games etc. Each sub-menu has many applications. You can try to learn them yourselves by clicking and selecting options. “Self learning” is an important possibility with ICT. Try, Learn, Enjoy.<br>
Shutting down the computer
What will you do after you have finished your work? You have to turn off the computer. You must turn it off by clicking on the last button on the right hand top corner and select shut down. Never turn off the power button without shutting the computer properly.

1.Using a DVD?
It’s easy to install Ubuntu from a DVD. Here’s what you need to do:
Put the Ubuntu DVD into the DVD-drive
Restart your computer. You should see a welcome screen prompting you to choose your language and giving you the option to install Ubuntu or try it from the DVD.<br>
2.Using a USB drive?

Most newer computers can boot from USB. You should see a welcome screen prompting you to choose your language and giving you the option to install Ubuntu or try it from the USB.

If your computer doesn’t automatically do so, you might need to press the F12 key to bring up the boot menu, but be careful not to hold it down - that can cause an error message.<br>
3.Prepare to install Ubuntu
We recommend you plug your computer into a power source
4.You should also make sure you have enough space on your computer to install Ubuntu
We advise you to select Download updates while installing and Install this third-party software now
You should also stay connected to the internet so you can get the latest updates while you install Ubuntu
If you are not connected to the internet, you will be asked to select a wireless network, if available. We advise you to connect during the installation so we can ensure your machine is up to date<br>
5.Allocate drive space
Use the checkboxes to choose whether you’d like to Install Ubuntu alongside another operating system, delete your existing operating system and replace it with Ubuntu, or — if you’re an advanced user — choose the ’Something else’ option<br>
6.Begin the installation
Depending on your previous selections, you can now verify that you have chosen the way in which you would like to install Ubuntu. The installation process will begin when you click the Install Now button.
Ubuntu needs about 4.5 GB to install, so add a few extra GB to allow for your files.<br>
7.Select your location
If you are connected to the internet, this should be done automatically. Check your location is correct and click ’Forward’ to proceed. If you’re unsure of your time zone, type the name of the town you’re in or click on the map and we’ll help you find it.<br>
Select your preferred keyboard layout
Click on the language option you need. If you’re not sure, click the ’Detect Keyboard Layout’ button for help.<br>
8.Enter your login and password details<br>

Earlier accountants used large piece of paper for business finances, which they called “spreadsheet”, to enter information like costs, payments, taxes, income etc. to get a complete financial overview. The digital spreadsheet is similar, with columns and rows. A cell is a combination or intersection of a row and a column, in which information (both text and numeric) can be input. A sheet can be understood as an array of cells.

You can go to the cell below last row with data in Column B, which has the rainfall information and simply type in “=Sum(B2:B15)” assuming the data is in rows 2 through 15 of column B. Any computation or formula must begin with the “=” sign. Or you can simply use the shorthand icon on the menu bar “∑” and hit enter and the application will insert the same formula.
When the cursor is on this cell, the formula will be seen in the ‘formula’ bar on top of the sheet, below the menu.
All arithmetic operations, statistical operations are possible with spreadsheet.
You can ‘copy paste’ a formula from one cell to other cells in the same column, here ‘copy paste’ by default will copy paste the formula and not the content.

And what we know also as science largely relates to the facts and explanations of everyday life. There is a need to examine what constitutes science as a process, the discipline of doing science. What are those elements of study and practice that distinguish science as an endeavour? What are the social dynamics that influence the practice of science? What are the limits of science itself? These are questions that have to be considered by a student of science. National Conference on "[http://www.ncert.nic.in/MathematicsConference.htm Developing Mathematics Teachers for Quality Learning for All]" was organized on Dec 20-22 at Regional Institute of Education, Ajmer. '''Praveen Sir from Kolar''' district participated and made a poster presentation on the use of Origami for mathematics teaching.

He has shared:
"I got a great opportunity to represent my state/school to the entire country through a confrence called National Conference on Teachers of Mathematics Quality Learning for all. Out of 120 papers recieved, only 70 were selected to present. I was forutnate enough to be one of 70s. I presented a poster on ORIGAMI. Very few people knew ORIgami there. That mae my poster very special.I
presenter the poster on the topic : "teaching of geometry using origami in the class room." I could able to present 10 posters on the topic and also demonstrated several 2-d, 3-d objects. Mine was not like the other lectures. Even the convener appreciated the action of Origami."

Mathematics is a language - many mathematicians have described the process of mathematics as art and poetry. Bertrand Russell once wrote, “Mathematics possesses not only truth but supreme beauty, a beauty cold and austere, like that of sculpture, sublimely pure and capable of a stern perfection, such as only the greatest art can show.” Other mathematicians and scientists have often written about the unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics in explaining the world around. Notwithstanding the poetry and the beauty, a functional knowledge of mathematics and computing is an essential skill for transacting in society.

However, to appreciate the poetry of this language or to transact, one must learn the grammar and acquire the vocabulary. And school mathematics is largely about acquiring the skills to communicate and develop the love for the language. This portal is for students and teachers to engage with this language and build those skills.

Brief Note:<br>
It is common knowledge that mathematics at the school level is feared. Failure rates are high, especially among socially and economically marginalised children and often, there is a complete disconnect between the mathematics being taught at school and a child's social reality. Much has
been theorised about the relationship between culture, learning and cognition. “Social Justice” is a term used extensively in connection with mathematics education and seemingly, there is recognition at the theoretical level of the importance of making mathematics education equitable. Yet, based on
my experience (particularly in Karnataka), the reality of what is being practiced in the classrooms and what one witnesses on the ground, is completely different. The significantly disproportionate numbers of marginalised students that continue to fail at standard measures of school mathematics
are testimony to this.
This study primarily seeks to understand the relationships between different forms of mathematical knowledge, out of school and in school; and the ways in which these forms mediate mathematical cognition at school. Additionally, it aims to discuss the above findings by juxtaposing the curriculum, some dominant theories of cognition, teaching and pedagogy towards understanding the obstructions and problems in achieving meaningful mathematics for all, that is, a socially just mathematics education
